How to Make a Bing Dwen Dwen Themed Medal with EM-Smart?

It is the fifth day of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics today.

A cute cuddly panda named Bing Dwen Dwen has stood out from the rest of the merchandise for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, with a handful of the official mascot-themed items out of stock amid a whole-of-society Olympics fever.

The chubby panda, wrapped in a layer of ice, resembles an astronaut, and it has become all the rage shortly prior to the Olympics opening, as the lovable mascot, rated by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games as the most trending topic on social media, appeals to Chinese audiences and foreign athletes and media alike.

Currently, Bing Dwen Dwen has been sold out on the official store for Winter Olympics, and the flagship store for Olympic products at e-commerce website Tmall.com also said the small statuette for Bing Dwen Dwen was temporarily unavailable after more than 70,000 were sold since January.

So, some of the eager fans have flooded the flagship brick-and-mortar venues in Beijing to try their luck at snapping this ice panda item.

Outside China, the two mascots for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games — Bing Dwen Dwen and Shuey Rhon Rhon, unveiled in 2019, have quickly gained worldwide popularity for their adorable outlook as well.

In addition, the design for Bing Dwen Dwen was chosen from over 5,800 submissions from China and 35 countries around the world as part of a global competition arranged by the Beijing 2022 Organizing Committee.

The Beijing Winter Olympics panda mascot is so popular that desperate fans have started making their own souvenirs after stocks ran out.

As one of the crazy fans, I also decided to make a special Bing Dwen Dwen — themed souvenir — a medal with this mascot pattern, using the EM-Smart One, the flagship product of CDI Tech and the smallest 20W fiber laser marking machine in the world. For the purpose of sharing, I also shot a video of the marking process and posted it here on our YouTube channel. This article, meanwhile, is also going to introduce full steps to finish the process.

Machine: EM-Smart 20W Fiber Laser Marking Machine
Output Power: 20
Material: Metal (Copper)
Marking Pattern: Bing Dwen Dwen
Marking Duration: 2 minutes

Marking Parameters:

Marking Speed: 500mm/s
Marking Power: 80%
Frequency: 20% (default)
Marking Loop: 3

Polishing Parameters:

Marking Speed: 1000mm/s
Marking Power: 30%
Frequency: 20% (default)
Marking Loop: 2

Here comes the steps:

Step 1: prepare the vector of Bing Dwen Dwen and import it into the marking software EZCAD

Some may ask where could I find this Bing Dwen Dwen in the format of vector (e.g. svg, png, ai, etc.). There are two ways I’ve found so far that are quite easy and convenient:

First; visit image.google.com and search by specific keywords. In the “Tools” section you may filter the search result by the format of files as shown in the screenshot below.

Second, use specific websites like https://svgsilh.com or https://svgporn.com/ (you can find a lot of similar sites from Google ) to download the vectors you need. However, shortages of such sites are that their database is not up to date, so you won’t find some patterns in some cases.

Besides the above two methods, there is another way worth my emphasizing and your trying — Adobe Illustrator — if you know design and how to use this professional software.

Step 2: Resize the vector and apply your changes

The reason why you have to resize the vector is that every laser marking machine has a limited marking area, let’s say EM-Smart, it has a standard marking area of 110mm*110mm (you may upgrade it to 150mm*150mm by changing the laser head into a larger one). The vector pattern should be marked or engraved within the limited area.

Step 3: Apply the hatch to fill the sketch

As you can see the panda pattern in Step 2 is made up of lines. The purpose of hatch is to fill the blank areas of the sketch, which are also the areas to be laser marked.

After applying the hatch, you will see a panda pattern like this:

Step 4: Set marking parameters including speed, power, and loop.

I’ve written the detailed parameters above I’ve used in the video. There are two aspects you should pay attention to and understand: this marking process can be actually divided into two parts: marking first and polishing later. We usually use more powerful parameters for marking, while less powerful settings for polishing. (Specifically, 80% for marking and 30% for polishing, in this case)

Step 5: Click “Light” icon to preview and “Mark” icon to mark

The reason why we click “Light” icon to preview is that we need focus before every marking or engraving. Click the blank area of the working canvas and then click the “Light” icon, you will see two red dots on the physical working plate. Rotate the knob clockwise or anticlockwise to make sure these two red dots overlap each other. That is the point where the laser gets focused.

The medal being polished, power 30%, speed 1000mm/s

The whole process will take approximately two minutes. After marking and polishing, you will get a sparkling Bing Dwen Dwen — themed medal like this!

You can do it yourself for fun or for your loved ones to express your love. What’s more, you can also do a batch of these then sell them online or offline. It could be more than just a hobby. You may develop it into a sustainable business. With EM-Smart laser marking machine, what you can mark and engrave are much more than a Bing Dwen Dwen pattern or a medal since this machine is able to work on almost all kinds of materials such as metals, plastics, slates, leathers, stones, coated wood, etc.
